The Appalachian Highland Cattle Society is the Region of the American Highland Cattle Association that extends from Virginia to Mississippi and from Kentucky to Florida. It was formed in l983 with eleven charter members and has grown into an active region with thirty members. One of the original goals was the vision held by John Anderson "of someday seeing every small farm up in the hollows of Appalachia with a Highland cow and calf".

Highland Cattle are hardy, long-lived cattle that work well in the small farm environment. They are known for the docility and ability to survive. Due to their unique appearance they quickly become a focal point for any farm. They can be used as dual purpose cattle as both beef and milk for the homestead. They make excellent oxen and add a certain pizzazz to any parade. They are hits at almost every Scottish Festival they attend and parents soon learn to schedule plenty of time at the "Longhair cattle area". If you want "an easy keeper" cow for the family homestead this is one to consider!
